Synopsis
In House Play is a reflection of myself in refraction. In intimate interactions between person, place, and memory a home is continuously dissected while simultaneously being reconstructed. Leaving behind a space of queer conscience, reactive to real and imagined stimulus.
Biography
Devin N Morris (b. 1986, Baltimore, MD) studied Fashion Merchandising at University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Princess Anne, MD and Journalism and New Media, Towson University, MD. He lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Through his mixed media paintings, photographs, writings, and videos, Morris collapses personal experience, memory, and space to delicately envision new realms. The artist considers his upbringing in Baltimore and navigating the world as a black, queer, HIV positive man in his depictions of real and imagined characters engaged in acts of kindness and care. His explorations of the domestic space place the viewer inside abstracted rooms that subvert traditional values and social boundaries.
In 2018, Morris was selected for The Aesthetics of Matter- the curatorial project by Duex Femme Noires: Mickalene Thomas and Racquel Chevremont, presented at VOLTA, New York, NY. In 2017, he was named by Time Magazine as one of “12 African American Photographers You Should Follow.” Morris is the founding editor of 3 Dot Zine.
