The Parlour
The Parlour is an artist-run exhibition space located in the historic neighborhood of Mount Vernon, Baltimore, Maryland. It was founded in April 2019 by Erick Antonio Benitez and Ariel Cavalcante Foster, who curate art exhibitions, an experimental sound series, performances and community events. The Parlour exhibits artwork with the vision to merge art communities and audiences, focusing on women, people of color and the LGBTQIA communities based in Baltimore and the East Coast who have not shown frequently in the area. Each show has consistently exhibited a multitude of material, mediums and an integration of the physical space. The Parlour's accentuated gold mirrors, crystal chandelier, and marble fireplace grounds the works in a domestic setting that gives the art a context and a sense of belonging. The experimental sound series and performance art events support these communities who have limited venue opportunities and exposure. The community events consist of dinners, ceremonies, interactive art and workshops. These events hold a space for education, community building and gatherings of open dialogues on issues related to the surrounding community.
